How this calculator works

Payoff time is how many monthly payments remain to bring your current balance to zero at the payment you make.

n = −ln(1 − i × B ÷ M) ÷ ln(1 + i)

  • B — your current balance
  • i — the monthly rate, the annual rate divided by 1,200
  • M — your monthly payment, including any extra amount

Remaining interest is M × n − B. If M is no larger than the interest charged in a month, the balance never falls and the tool says so instead of inventing a payoff date. Extra money goes straight to principal, which shortens the schedule. Enter the rate and balance from your own statement.

What changes your result

Only a few inputs move the number materially. In rough order of impact:

Sensitivity of the monthly payment
InputEffect on the paymentEffect on total cost
Amount financedDirectly proportionalDirectly proportional
Interest rate / APRDirectly proportionalDirectly proportional
Term (months)Lower payment when longerHigher total interest when longer
Down paymentLowers the paymentLowers total interest
Trade-in equityLowers the amount financedLowers total interest
Sales tax and feesRaises the amount financedRaises total cost

Enter the rate you were actually offered. This site is not a lender and does not publish rates — a quoted rate is only meaningful next to the term and the amount financed.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my current balance?
Use the payoff balance shown on your latest statement or in your online account, not the original amount you borrowed.
Why does the tool say the payment does not cover the interest?
If the payment is no larger than the interest charged each month, nothing is left over to reduce the principal. Raise the payment above the monthly interest to make progress.
How much does an extra payment help?
Every extra dollar goes to principal, which lowers the balance and the interest charged next month. The tool shows both the shorter payoff and the interest saved.
Is the final payment a full one?
Not always. The count is the number of payments from today, and the last one is often a little smaller than a normal payment.
